Dental Implant Procedures: A Step by Step Process

What is a dental implant procedure?

A dental implant procedure is a multi-step process that surgically replaces the root of a missing tooth or teeth with a small, screw-like post made of titanium.

Who needs a dental implant?

While anyone with missing or damaged teeth can explore dental implants, they're often a perfect solution for those facing poor long-term oral health and a history of ongoing dental issues. Implants can not only restore function and your smile, but also improve your overall oral health.

Traditional Dental Implant Process: Single & Multiple Implants

1. Consulting and Planning:

This initial step involves a thorough examination of your oral health by a restorative dentist or oral surgeon, who will offer the best options available to you based on the condition of your teeth, your risk factors and your available bone. Digital 3-D X-ray scans are the standard used to assess bone health and determine the best placement for the implant(s). This appointment is the best time to plan the tooth design and make sure the recommended treatment is consistent with the goals of the patient and that it makes sense with potential future dental needs.

2. Extraction and Implant Placement:

The surgical appointment adapts to your individual situation. Local anesthesia or sedation ensures comfort during the procedure. If a tooth is present, it will be carefully extracted before implant placement. If the implant is being inserted after the extraction area has already healed a small incision grants access to the jawbone. The precisely placed implant post is then surgically inserted. The gum tissue is then stitched closed, and a temporary tooth or surgical healing cap might be used to protect the implant site while healing progresses.

3. Healing Osseointegration:

Following the implants placement, the jawbone fuses with the implant surface in a process called osseointegration. This healing period typically takes a few months (3-6 months) to ensure a strong and stable foundation for the artificial tooth.

4. Abutment Placement:

Once osseointegration is complete, a small connector piece called an “abutment” is attached to the implant. This abutment will act as the base for the artificial tooth (crown or bridge).

5. Final Tooth Replacement:

Finally, the permanent artificial tooth, such as a crown or bridge, is secured onto the abutment. This completes the dental implant procedure, restoring both the function and aesthetics of your smile.

Implant Healing: What to Expect

Recovery time for dental implants varies depending on the complexity of your procedure and how quickly it will typically take to heal. Most people can return to work the next day, although you might experience some swelling and discomfort during the first few days, which can be managed with medication. While the dental implant procedure itself can be completed in a single appointment, the overall healing time is spread out over several months. Following implant placement, there's an initial healing period of 3-6 months for the jawbone to fuse with the implant (osseointegration).  Once osseointegration is complete, the abutment and then the permanent restoration (crown, bridge, etc.) can be attached. So, the entire process from initial consultation to a fully restored smile with a dental implant can take anywhere from 4 to 6 months, depending on individual needs and healing rates.

Pain and Discomfort

Modern Anesthesia

Advances in Dental implant surgery is typically performed with a combination of local anesthesia to completely numb the area, and or often sedation to eliminate anxiety, ensuring total comfort, without any significant stress or worry during the procedure.

Pain Management

Your Hybridge dentist will prescribe pain medication to manage any post-surgical pain, which is typically manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers. Stronger pain medications can be prescribed based on the specifics of the implant procedure being done.

Cost and Insurance Coverage for Dental Implants

Investment in Your Smile

Implants are a long-term solution with a high success rate, often considered an investment in your oral health and overall well-being. The cost of treatment will be dependent on your individual situation and when your Hybridge doctor provides the best options for you, you’ll also know the exact cost of your dental implant treatment. Dental insurance may cover some of the cost of treatment, however each plan is different, so you’ll want to check with your plan administrator for details.

Length of Treatment

The timeframe for this stage depends heavily on your specific needs and the treatment plan chosen. Here's a breakdown for each option:

Traditional Implants: Dental implants, whether single or multiple tooth replacement, typically require multiple appointments spread over a few months to allow for proper healing. Once the stability and strength of the supporting implant(s) is confirmed after healing, the final tooth crowns or bridges can be completed, restoring full chewing pressure.

Hybridge Full-Arch Restoration: This treatment offers a shorter timeline than traditional implant replacement, often with fewer appointments. The process typically involves 4 distinct steps spread out over 4-6 weeks from the time of implant surgery. This timeframe incorporates planning, implant placement, temporary teeth during the healing time, to the delivery of the final Hybridge Full Arch prosthesis.

Long-Term Implant Maintenance

Like Natural Teeth

Taking care of dental implants is just like caring for your natural teeth: brush twice daily, floss daily, and schedule regular dental checkups. Flossing is especially crucial, as it removes plaque and food particles that can build up around the implant and between the implant crown and surrounding teeth. By following this simple routine, you'll ensure the long-term health and success of your implants.

Long-lasting Results

While lifestyle choices and normal wear and tear can affect their lifespan, with proper care, implants can remarkably last for many decades, much like the healthiest of natural teeth. Regular brushing, flossing, and professional dental cleanings are key to maintaining healthy implants and maximizing their longevity.
